Retro Future Rides Again

Presenting another batch of retro sci-fi figures from Hydra Miniatures. I tried to do eyes on some, but gave up and fell back on just slightly shaded eye sockets.

The "Rocketson" family (as listed in their catalog) - I based the paint scheme on the obvious inspiration.

"Galaxy City Gals" - for the 2 on either end I roughly based them on Star Trek women, as is probably evident. The one in the middle reminded me of people like Marcia Brady and Laurie Partridge, so I tried to capture that sort of look with the colors.

"Cosmic Kids" - the girl made me think of Alice in Wonderland, the boy in the middle made me think of a young Wesley Crusher ("shut up, Wesley"). I didn't have any ideas for the other boy; not sure if he was meant to look like anyone in particular.

A pair of "Centurion" robots, and a "Galaxy City Guy" - I have some of the robots without capes/cloaks, painted in a gun metal color, as a squad of regular robots; these 2 are more elite. The "guy" is just a generic civilian.

  1. Nice collection Fitz, on the eye's I know how you feel, but I've a little trick that I use sometimes, you can get these little pens that are like a marker with a very small nib & just put a dot for the eye.

Can't think of the name of them off hand but if you want to know just let me know & I'll find out for you.

    1. Thanks! I have some Posco paint pens, but I haven't tried using them to do eyes on minis. I'm quite happy to leave the eyes off. It's not like I will really see their eyes if I'm playing games with them, and these would mostly be "extras"/background figures.

    2. "Alice", that little girl holding the ALF toy is rather creepy! Some sort of Alien Agent?

    3. Ha! I suppose you could see it that way. And is it a toy? dun, dun, dun!

  3. Another great selection. I love how you manage to keep the colours so clean and crisp.

    1. Thanks, Michael! I honestly don't think mine are anywhere near the high quality of you miniatures, but good enough for me.

My usual method these days is a basecoat of black gesso, followed by a heavy drybrush of white gesso, then block in the colors. For some things, such as flesh or entire figures in the case of orcs, for example, I will brush on GW flesh shade and/or sepia (or occasionally other shades). But when I want to keep the colors clean like on most of these figures I forego the shade. I also usually don't do much highlighting or blending.

    1. Thanks! Yeah, I do like the robots.

A lot of these civilian figures remind me of those used for model railways. I guess I have enough for a decently busy spaceport. ha ha

  5. Love the elite robots! The civilians are excellent too and I really like the 1950s vibe!

  6. These retro-sci-fi minis are really fun. Do you have scenarios in mind for any of them? Just random civilians to get in the way of the REAL action?

    1. The game, Core Space, does have options for civilians, so I could use them as stand-ins for that. Or just as background extras in sci-fi scenes. Joseph McCullough's Operation Last train rules are about rescuing civilians from "bugs", so that's another possibility. Mostly I just got them because they looked fun (especially the "Rocketson family"). I often buy and paint minis just because I like the way they look. And I don't always get around to playing any games with them. I guess I should just admit I'm more of a collector/painter than a gamer at this point. :) (still, maybe they will appear in a game some day)

    2. Ha! Yeah, I too buy a LOT of miniatures just because they're "fun" and have no idea if I'll EVER realistically use them in a game... Oh, I like to dream about scenarios where they might see use... but a lot of them aren't really realistically playable "scenarios" for tabletop!

    3. Oh, I like to TELL (i.e. "lie to") myself that they will all be used in some game, some day... but when I'm being honest...

    4. Thanks, Tim! Yeah, often while I am painting minis I will think of characters and backgrounds and scenarios that never get much beyond flights of fancy. But I guess that is part of the fun for me, just letting my imagination play while I paint. :)
