Sci-fi Minis

 Just a few assorted minis. Mostly from Crooked Dice Minis.

A couple of alien officials. Could be patrons, or NPCs in a scenario.

A couple of potential crew members.

Some traders. The one on the left could be a botanist, the one on the right could be some sort of technician.

This mini is not from Crooked Dice, but has been in my pile of minis for a while. I forget where it came from. I think it fits in with some other figures that could be ground crew or working in a warehouse or some sort of corporate environment.

A Few More Sci-Fi Minis

 More from Effigy Minis Crisis Protocol Kickstarter.

I realized these first three had similar suits to the previous troops I had painted in green so I decided to paint them in similar colors. The first one, with the pink hair, could be some sort of operative. The second one is in the act of taking off her helmet, and the third one seems to be communicating with someone.

Next, we have a couple of more flashy, dynamic characters. I'm not sure what they are up to or who they are. Potential villains? Heroes? One of each? Something else? Who knows.

And finally, a couple of civilians. Possibly executives, patrons, bosses, etc. I figured they'd mostly be encountered indoors or in urban areas with some sort of pavement or other hard surface.

Rangers (or Bandits)

Various rangers from Midlam Miniatures. These are metal figures. I think they could also work as your typical wilderness bandits, too. Do they seem more foul or more fair?

I primed them in gray gesso; then did a heavy dry-brush in white gesso. Then blocked in mostly various greens and browns and fleshtones, and to be honest, wasn't super careful about getting the paint just right or within the "lines", as it were, figuring the next step would help cover up minor discrepancies. Next, I covered them in Army Painter's Light Tone wash. And after the wash, I painted the iron bits, such as the sword blades, and the gray of the arrow fletching. I think they don't look too bad for tabletop use.

17 of them was kind of a lot to paint at once, but for this lot it seemed to make sense to do it that way.

Witches and Others

 My latest batch of minis. These are an eclectic mix.

Two green-skinned witches from Northumbrian Tin Soldier. They make me think of Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax from Terry Pratchett's Discworld stories.

Three witch sisters, obviously based on the characters from the Hocus Pocus movie, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. Also from Northumbrian Tin Soldier.

A goatman, large goofy bat (maybe a vampire in bat form?), both from Northumbrian Tin Soldier. And a treasure chest mimic from Super Dungeon Explore.

A steampunk lady from Reaper, and a couple of cats whose source I have forgotten.

Dwarves and Friends

 Some miniatures from Northumbrian Tin Soldier.

First, a fancy dwarf, a Will Scarlet look-alike and his halfling assistant.

Noggin, part 4

Another batch of Noggin miniatures from Little Soldier Company. Probably the last of the Noggin minis I will do for a while (I do have minis of Noggin and Nootka sitting on thrones, 2 soldiers on horseback and a couple of variants of Nogbad the Bad, but I think I will do those some other time).

Noggin, part 2

Finally finished a few civilians from the set of Noggin the Nog minis.

Noggin, part 1

Some guards/soldiers from the land of Nog. These minis are from a kickstarter by the Little Soldier Company. I tried to follow their color schemes as much as I could.

I have more miniatures from the kickstarters to paint in the coming weeks (I won't kid myself thaat it will only take days - ha ha).

Retro Future Rides Again

Presenting another batch of retro sci-fi figures from Hydra Miniatures. I tried to do eyes on some, but gave up and fell back on just slightly shaded eye sockets.

The "Rocketson" family (as listed in their catalog) - I based the paint scheme on the obvious inspiration.

"Galaxy City Gals" - for the 2 on either end I roughly based them on Star Trek women, as is probably evident. The one in the middle reminded me of people like Marcia Brady and Laurie Partridge, so I tried to capture that sort of look with the colors.

"Cosmic Kids" - the girl made me think of Alice in Wonderland, the boy in the middle made me think of a young Wesley Crusher ("shut up, Wesley"). I didn't have any ideas for the other boy; not sure if he was meant to look like anyone in particular.

A pair of "Centurion" robots, and a "Galaxy City Guy" - I have some of the robots without capes/cloaks, painted in a gun metal color, as a squad of regular robots; these 2 are more elite. The "guy" is just a generic civilian.

Stellar Adventurers

More Reaper miniatures.

First, mousling adventurer.

A space smuggler and a steampunk lady; she will represent a starship captain in some gaming and he will represent one of the crew.

Another steampunk character. I don't have specific use for him yet. Maybe a space lawman of some sort?

My latest batch of minis. My painting output is very slow these days!

A scout and an infantry soldier from Venus Women at War kickstarter

A Reaper aardvark, a couple of dodos from Bombshell Miniatures, and a stirge from Toad King Castings kickstarter getting into someone's ale.

And some dwarf musketeer cavalry from Iron Mask Miniatures, also a kickstarter project.

Halflings and Big-folk

More halflings  and a couple of big-folk from Foundry. The female "Robin Hood", the villain (boo, hiss), and the halfling in green are from an old Foundry pantomime set. The rest of the halflings are from a more recent halfling set. There are 3 or 4 more halflings from that set that I haven't painted yet. I like the cartoonish look of the halflings and they fit in well with some old GW halflings I have. Similar stocky build, not the weedy (but possibly more refined/realistic) figures of some miniature lines. These are stout lads and lasses.

I have some ideas of how to use these in some games, scenarios and battles (ala Hordes of the Things or similar rules where you don't need large numbers of similar figures for each unit). The variety of figures gives me lots of ideas for characters and abilities. More on that if or when it comes to fruition.

Meanwhile, I have been enjoying playing various boardgames solo. So far, in the past couple of weeks I have played Race for the Galaxy, Tales of the Arabian Nights, Witches of Discworld, and Agents of SMERSH. All fun solo games with good thematic story-telling aspects, good artwork, various levels of challenge. Some wins and more losses, but lots of fun.

(apologies for the variable quality of the pictures - I keep trying to get good shots, but I can't tell how they really look until I upload them to my computer, and I haven't figured out the right combination of lighting, camera settings, placement, etc.)

Even More Assorted Miniatures

This time around, a mortar, which I think was a bombard from a 15mm or 10mm set (I forgot where I got this from), but seems to make a good smallish mortar for 28mm figures. The wonders of "modern miniaturization".

A snow leopard, from Reaper. The large cat is the animal ally of a druid (which I don't have).

And finally, Boadicea/Boudicca, queen of the Iceni, from Hasslefree Miniatures. I tried to do a different plaid on her cloak. It's not the best, but I guess it'll do.

More Assorted Miniatures

First, some halfling militia/home guard and a couple of halfling adventurers with their well-stocked pony, all from Foundry.

Next a female archer from Reaper and a couple of male archers, source forgotten.

And last, but not least, some female dwarf warriors. I think these were from the same manufacturer who did the Highlander dwarves I did quite some time ago. The one with the axe is a weapons conversion. Her sword was too fragile, so I used a plastic axe head from a GW dwarf sprue, a bit of wire, a bead, and some greenstuff, to give her a sturdier weapon.

Finieous Fingers and Friends

Here are some very old miniatures from the days of the comic strip in the Dragon magazine, painted long ago. I have a comic book of the collected strips from that time, too.

A Few Assorted Minis, Newly Painted

Dwarf lord celebrating the New Year. This is a GW miniature representing another take on their dwarf brewmeister Bugman. Apparently someone knocked his beer over!

Some kids from Hasslefree minis. I don't know if they have anything to do with large felines, magic-using females, or bedroom furniture (not being familiar with stories where such things are mentioned...).

A Few Odds and Ends

You ever come across old minis you had lying around somewhere half-forgotten?

In honor of Halloween here are some old GW skeletons and orc archer.
And another band of heroes. I think they're all GW/Citadel minis.

From the back, mostly so you can see the shields of the 2 warrior women.

Next, some old greens I sculpted quite some time ago. Practice pieces, not sure I'll ever do anything with them.
