Rescue from Bugs

(no bunnies involved)

I played a game of Operation Last Train. A set of free rules by Joseph McCullough.

The Starstuff Rifles sent in a team of crack riflemen (rifledwarves?) to rescue civilians from the bug infestation on Mimus 6. The team included 3 dwarf veterans armed with laser rifles, one armed with a machine gun, and a communications specialist armed with a pistol.

They arrived at the southern edge of the small settlement. To the northwest was one smaller farmhouse, another larger main house to the north, and a 2nd smaller house to the northeast. The landscape had scattered trees, equipment, rocks, etc, with some power conduits running through part of the center and along one side. The team already spotted several bugs.

Moving forward the team opened fire and killed 2 of the nasty critters. First the team worked to clear out the central area where the most bugs were concentrated and of immediate danger.

They discovered 2 civilians in the house to their left, as bugs started moving up. Still, they continued killing bugs as they advanced.

The team approached the main house, and killed more bugs, but the machine gun jammed. Luckily the gunner kept his head and quickly cleared the jam (played Quick Load/Clearance card). Once they reached the main house there was a fierce firefight. The team killed 4 bugs, at the cost of the machine gunning jamming again. They also found 10 more civilians sheltered there.

At this point the communications specialist made the call to bring in the dropship to evacuate the team and civilians.

As the bugs were moving in and getting close enough to attack most of the civilians were loaded onto the dropship. One of the riflemen found himself in desperate hand to hand combat against one of the vile creatures and at first it looked like he had gone under. But it turned out he was Not Quite Dead (another card), and managed to fight back and kill the bug.

Meanwhile, the communications specialist rescued 3 more civilians from the other small house, as the rest of the team fought off the bugs. Then, once all of the civilians were on board the dropship the team boarded as well and they all departed the area.

Final tally:
5 riflemen survived with no injuries
15 civilians rescued
23 bugs killed

  1. Sounds Fun!

I like the dropship - is that a World War Toon model from Meng?

Close. It's a Hasegawa Egg Plane Osprey. Similar idea as the Meng World War Toon models. It was smaller than I thought it would be, so all of those civilians and troops will have to squeeze in like clowns in a clown car!

Well, the camera work was nothing like yours. Mine is more like an amateur home movie. :)

Still, it was fun and that's what counts. Nice to get a project complete enough to get a game to the table.

  4. Heroic scifi at its best. (Sells more popcorn when the good guys win after some tense moments)

    Looks like good fun anyway.

There are ways to tweak things so it's tougher for the good guys; armored bugs that are harder to kill, making the bugs head for the good guys even if none are in LoS, etc.

It is fun. The designer has also designed Frostgrave, Rangers of Shadow Deep, and various supplements to those, among others.
There are also additional scenarios, more types of bugs, etc.
